Day 4

Day 4

Today has been good. I got to the beach, hugged some Redwoods and got my first Couch lined up. I’m doing this couch surfing thing. If you don’t know what it is check out couchsurfing.com. Anyway I’m stoked on it. But I’m about an hour away from Eugene, Oregon and I can’t meet up with this guy for a couple more hours. So I stopped at a rest stop and started writing. I’ve figured that if I can keep my laptop on and cool it will work. As long as I don’t ever shut it down, let it run out of battery, or open too many tabs it will stay alive. I just have to be careful and make sure that I always plug it in any chance I get.

But other than that I am exhausted and I am going to sleep. I am here at my first couch and it's cool so far. I’ll be rolling up to the Space Needle around 3pm tomorrow. Then from there I’ll be heading toward Wisconsin!

Night.

Day 3: I Got 99 Problems but Meth Ain't One

Day 3: I Got 99 Problems but Meth Ain’t One

Well, I am alive. Here we go. About forty minutes into traveling I was run off the highway by a semi-truck. Yup. I know. I was passing him on his left fairly rapidly and nearly to the cab when he started to merge into my lane. I hit the gas to overtake him before we would have collided but I ended up swerving into the gravel shoulder. He slammed on his brakes and I was able to get back onto the road after a few tense maneuvers. I ended up in front of him speeding away. He flashed his headlights in a rapid fashion which I’m assuming in trucker language meant “OMG, I’m so sorry and I’m glad you’re alive!” I turned up the radio and sped away.

At that point I thought I had my excitement for the day, but it just gets more interesting. Pulling into a gas station about two hours later I wanted to clean out my car, but there was no parking spots open in front of the Chevron station so I rounded the corner to the back where I parked a few spaces down from a Samoan working on the engine of his car. Next to the nearby dumpster there was a clothes donation station and I, being nearly obsessive with minimizing the stuff around me began cleaning out my car throwing garbage away and donating about seven articles of clothing that I didn’t need.

After a minute or two Kevin came over to me and struck up a conversation.

“How’s it going man? Coming from Utah huh?”

“Yeah man.” I smiled.

“What are you doing out here?”

“Got the urge to travel the states! Heading north and gonna make it as far as I can. You broken down or…”

“Oh, I was having car trouble but I’m good now. I’m traveling too. What an adventure huh?”

“I hear ya.”

I was thoroughly enjoying our conversation. He was a happy looking dude and I was beginning to feel for his six year old son that his mom was taking care of in San Juan. He was bored with his Security job and quite to travel the country. It was a little different but it was “crazy” how similar our situations were he affirmed. After getting a handle on where it was that I used to work he asked if I smoked.

“I’ve been in the same room as weed smoke, but that’s about it, man.”

“You know, I got some stuff if you’re interested in trying something.”

“What do you got?” I couldn’t help myself.

He cleared his throat and said softly, “Meth.”

Inside I couldn’t help but laugh and think that I was practically talking to Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad. But I stayed composed.

“I’m good man,” I said.

“You know I just take a little in the mornings as a booster It’ll help you out on the road, I’ll let you try some if you want.” He didn’t give up.

But right than another car pulled up. “I’m really good, but it looks like you got some new customers man. I’m gonna take off.” I insisted. But I looked over and it was a car full of teenagers. The oldest one couldn’t have been older than nineteen.

Here I was standing in front of a man who’s job it was to create addicts, and behind me four kids all looking to look cool in front of their friends.

I took a deep breath, turned back around to Kevin and shook is hand, “It was good talking with you.”

“Yeah man, take it easy,” he repliedas he looked passed me at his new prospects.

But before he could let go of my hand I gripped it tight. “They’re just kids man, let them be.” I spoke soft as I looked him in the eye.

He clenched his teeth and slowly nodded. I let go, got in my car and drove away.

Those kids probably told Kevin off too but I really am not worried about. Kevin will make his choices and those kids will make theirs. And that’s the end of that story.

Pulling into San Francisco Bay is another. But it’s just depressing. The tours were all sold out for Alcatraz, my phone was dying, and I was stressing out about deciding whether to find a place to stay so I could wait in line at 4 in the morning to get ahold of tickets for tomorrow. Idling in my car so I could keep my almost dead phone charging in an expensive parking garage so I could look up rooms for the night I began to have a panic attack. Between , not being allowed to leave the garage and return without repaying for a spot, trying to keep my phone charged, struggling with finding rooms, some of which were three-hundred dollars and others 60 dollars with no parking or wifi or breakfast, and worrying about making it to the apple store so they could evaluate my Mac and possibly get a new one if need be and stressing out at that prospect, I threw my phone in the car and just walked down the bay area so I could think. I sat down on a concrete block with skate-stoppers drilled into the ledge.

As I looked out at The Rock and hearing the barking of nearby seals, there was only one thought that clearly came to my mind. I needed to get out of there. So I did. I went back to my car. “Siri, directions to the Redwood National Forest.”

I twisted through a few hilly roads and “Stay on this road for 315 miles.” Thank God. I love those big numbers. All you have to do is drive straight off into the sunset.

I tell you. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a panic attack like that. Even driving solo with a rental car through downtown Manhattan wasn’t a big deal. I guess I’ve been a little stressed for the passed few days. But at the end of the day I give my thanks to God for helping me to this point. I’m alive, on the road, and I’m not a meth-head. Thank you. Life is good.

Gonna be in the Red Wood Forest tomorrow and into Oregon. And, oh yeah, I wrote this on my Mac… not my phone, which is good. Hopefully I can still make use of it for a little while longer. Time to sleep.

Peace.

Day 2

Waking up in the back of my car at a rest stop in the middle of the Mohave Desert actually makes this day 3 for me. I was too tired to post anything last night.

But yesterday, (day 2) other than living the dream and being on the open road ws kind of meh.

First thing I drove up Mars hill in Flagstaff and looked at the observatory Percival Lowell used to convince a nation that he was seeing the remains of an ancient alien civilization on the surface of Mars! After his reputation as an astronomer plummeted after such fanciful and unscientific claims he set out to discover Planet X in order to establish his credibility. Unfortunately, planet x too has fallen under the conspiracy theory table and his inability to find the planet broke his heart.

But thanks to his dedication even after his death using his telescope the  dwarf planet Pluto was discovered. What more do you need from the man! His story really is a fascinating one and worth looking into if you're unfamiliar with it.

Anyway, I descended the hill and started out toward Hoover dam. Now, I think I've been to the dam before but I must have been really young. It was crazy! I got some awesome pics that I'll try to post soon. Funnily enough some of the people responsible for the building of the Dam incorporated large star charts and constellation charts next to the structure so that an unspoken amount of years in the future an advanced alien race looking at the achievements of humanity would know exactly when the Hoover dam was built. The American flag flies high between two what I thought looked like cheribims with wings stretched toward the sky in honor of those who died constructing it. Rubbing the Angels toes brings you good luck... I didn't rub their toes... My justification for not doing so you ask? I've already got all the luck I need and I wouldn't want to unrightly use the luck that was meant for another!

Pressinng forward, I made a little detour through Vegas. Hit up a show you ask? A little gambling you ask? Maybe a ride? Nope. The Hollywood Las Vegas skatepark was calling my name! I tell you, if we had parks like these in Utah, I probobly would have been a pro skater. Maybe it's good we don't have those kinds of parks in Utah!

Then I hit the road again. Next stop Alcatraz. It's a ways away and I am currently, stretched out in the back of my Mazda with my legs stretched out of an open backseat door writing this. Once I stretch out and walk around a little bit I should be there in about 6 hours. That is About 3pm on the 26th. A Wednesday.  This might be one where I actually need to take a tour or something. Well, open road, buddy old friend. Let's do this.

Day 1

Oh. My. Gosh. Ok. Here we go. This has been a pretty unbelievable day in many regards. It has been exciting. It's been long. And it's been extremely frustrating. Down right maddening even. But, I live for this sort of stuff. I guess. Let me tell you the tale of my first day on the road. Brace yourself because I still haven't figured this one out.

It all began a few days ago. Saturday actually. I needed to get new wheels on my car because they were worn unevenly and my car was pulling to the right pretty bad. So I went to Les Schwab and they told me that my car would be ready just before they closed at 5 so I needed to be there to pick it up on time, otherwise no one could hand me the keys.

I went home--and fell asleep because I was exhausted from working overtime and odd hours. And yes. You guess it, I missed my time to pick my car up by two hours... And not only that, and just bless their little hearts but they also happen to be closed on Sunday's. So I was without a vehicle for a whole day, which is, from my experience not quite as bad as being without your phone for a day. Haha.

Anyway, my original plan was to leave around 3 in the morning on Monday, but Les Schwab doesn't open until 8am. So I was set back several hours right from the start. But that's not so bad. I got to sleep in a little bit.

So finally I picked up my car and headed out! And wow, I wish everyone could just go on road trips all the time. There is nothing like setting out on the open road with nothing before you but the setting sun and all the awesome adventures to come.

The next thing I knew I was skating the Cedar City skate park. It was fun but dinky. Honestly I spent way too much time there just messing around. I filmed a little but the footage has been compromised. I'll fill you in on why in a little bit. Let's continue forth for now.

Then I drove through Zions National park. And sadly I didn't get any pics cuz it was over before I could blink an eye. I thought I had more time in the park but the exit came quickly. It was awe inspiring though, what I saw as I drove.

Then on to the Grand Canyon I drove steadfastly with a gleam in my eye! And I'm just absolutely sure that everyone and their grandma knows that the North Rim Grand Canyon viewing area is a 40 mile dead end, but apparently I had no idea... Otherwise I wouldn't have gone to the North Rim... That's 80 miles there and back to highway 89a. Heavens. 80 miles...

But it wasn't a completely loss! Actually due to current events it might have been. But I am still getting to that. En route to the Canyon I was over taken by a herd of Bison! I was able to get a lot of sweet pics. So that was exciting. Finally I got to the end of the road and realized that it didn't continue on. I sighed. Heavily. But I took advantage of the scenery and soaked it all in. It was beautiful. It was awe inspiring. And I tried really hard to get a picture of me kick flipping into the Grand Canyon! You heard me right. There was this stone wall. And there was a perfect spot for me to set up my Nikon to take my pic of my kick flip. Pause. I don't think you realize how cool this would have been. Look at the photo that I posted as my cover photo on face book and imagine me doing a tweaked out ninja kick flip imposed over that view!

I waited patiently to get the shot but it was just too crowded and I really didn't want to get kicked out of a National Park since I just bought a nationwide National Park pass for $80. So I was disheartened and left with mixed feelings as I began to back track forty miles.

Finally I made it back out and began my trek to Flagstaff. A whole box of Avenger fruit snacks and a Red Bull later and here I am lying in the bed of a Super 8 Motel.

But the story doesn't end there. This is where it gets dynamic! So I stumbled in the front doors around 11pm and got a room. I managed to get all of my electronics charging and after writing this whole post, plugging both my Go Pro with my Cedar City footage on it and my 32 gig SD card with my Nikon photos on it into my Mac, it dies. My mac. No, it didn't just run out of battery. It was plugged in and fully charged. I was watching the skate footage and bam. Just freezes and shuts down. The kicker is that I hadn't published this post yet and I am rewriting this whole thing on my phone:0 on top of that I am afraid to eject my GoPro and my SD card because I'm worried about corrupted data if I do that.

So, desperately thinking I realized that I need something to put future footage and pics even if I lose what I already have so, after groaning in my depths I decided to buy a new PC laptop from the nearby Walmart super center.

Upon evaluation my options I finally, begrudgingly decide on the one I want. Well, turns out in only appeared as though they had that one but they really didn't. Keep in mind it's 2am at this point. But he offers me another HP laptop for only $250 on clearance. The problem is I need to know what ports it has and the box doesn't say and he "isn't allowed to open the box."

I'm about losing my mind at this point. But the dude is trying his best so I take it easy on him. I really can sympathize with him. Yes, a little known fact about me is that I worked in the electronics section of walmart for a brief jaunt. But I don't like to talk about that.

Anyway he gets his manger and we finally agree that I can purchase the device, open it in the store, look at it and then return it if it isn't what I need. And guess what. It wasn't what I needed. And guess what again. It took 45 minutes to return the product...

I ultimately returned home... Um, I mean to Super 8 Motel defeated, tired, and unsure of how to document my trip now.

I am going to sleep on it. I figure if it doesn't start up in the morning I'll just unplug my devices and risk the data loss. Also, I can in the future use a handy feature on my Nikon and wifi my photos to my phone so I can upload those to Facebook and Instagram. Theoretically I can still post them to my site but the interface is horrendous and I'm not sure if it would be worth attempting it through my phone. As for writing, I'll just have to use my phone for the time being. The biggest problem is the GoPro footage. I think I can connect it with Bluetooth to my phone but I haven't used that feature very much and I'm not certain what I can do with it really. I guess we'll see.

So that is that. Just an unbelievable first day on the road. In one regard I'm in a pickle but in another I am still undertaking a great project that I am still way excited about. I just wish I could document it better.

Im going to sleep on it. And come tomorrow I'll be in the Lowell observatory pondering upon the Canals that Percival oddly claimed seeing on the surface of Mars and learning more about the discovery of Pluto!

Thank you for reading. I put more effort into this post than you know. And unfortunately it is probobly ripe with grammatical errors because. You know, I wrote it on my phone.
