Questions I Need Answers

Did you know the universe is expanding? You probably did. But what you may not have known is that it isn't so much that things are moving away from us through space as it is that space itself is expanding. Space is expanding which pushes objects away from us. It's weird, I know. Literally, the space (empty space) is being created inbetween objects in space, and that is what is expanding. It's true. My question is this: if space is expanding, does that mean you and I were smaller in the past? I mean, the space between atoms is expanding, right? So, if we were able to time travel back ten years in the past would we see ourselves as smaller than we are now? Barring the time travel example, if this were the case, would it be possible to detect it?
